The jobs no one wants
There are now more job openings than people unemployed, reports Axios. Many of the industries struggling to recruit millennials, in particular, pay well and offer excellent benefits — but they’re physically or mentally demanding, if not both. Some of the American industries affected include:
- Construction: Young U.S workers are shunning construction because many businesses aren’t willing to offer training programs.
- Farming: Americans don’t want to work in agriculture and the government’s guest worker program is too expensive for growers.
- Trucking: The current shortage of 51,000 drivers is predicted to reach 100,000 by 2021, with millennials unwilling to endure the long hours and travel.
- 911 call centers: The lack of resources to train and pay workers and the high mental stress factor is putting people off.
