Counter Offers = Career Suicide

How many different reasons to you need to believe that any and all Counter-Offers mean eventual career suicide?  Oh, it may not happen immediately, but the statistics tell us that four out of five people who accept counter-offers are gone within the year.

Consider this:

Regarding the money– Where is this money coming from?  Why was it not available before?  What does it mean to your next scheduled raise or promotion?

Regarding the company– What kind of relationship do you have with leadership if you have to resign to be treated the way you think you should be?  What kind of relationship do you have with your boss if he hasn’t already gone to bat for your and gotten you the money you deserve?

Regarding your reputation– You made a decision and then changed your mind for money.  You indicated that you would be able to make a move for the right situation and then changed your mind for money.  You wanted to leave and then changed your mind for money.

If you need more to think about, just Google counter-offers.  No one from the Harvard Business Review on down sees anything positive in them.

Just think about it.  “Like Caesar’s wife, you cannot flirt with another and still be considered virtuous.
