The 75th celebration of Swedish Days in Geneva, IL began yesterday and continues through Sunday. This granddaddy of festivals offers something for everyone. Food, music, games, shopping, rides, arts and crafts, culminating in the most awesome parade on Sunday afternoon. The three hour parade begins at 1:00 PM and the route from the high school to the train station is always packed. The parade is my favorite part of Swedish Days and I never miss it.
Fun and playtime are important parts of life for all ages. We forget as we grow older that we are biologically wired for play. There is learning and growth that happens during playtime regardless of our age. In his recent best selling book, PLAY, Dr. Stuart Brown reminds us "When play is denied over the long term, our mood darkens. We lose our sense of optimism and we become anhedonic, or incapable of feeling sustained pleasure."
For adults in transition, life can, especially in the beginning seem hard. It doesn't have to be. Inject some fun, some playtime into your day and you'll see your mood improve and your productivity increase. Further, Dr. Brown says, "Far from standing in opposition to each other, play and work are mutually supportive."
Take time to play this week at Swedish Days in Geneva or perhaps somewhere closer to home. It doesn't matter where, it just matters that, like Nike says, you just do it! Have fun!
