Bill Russell introduces students to the art of improvisation as it relates to better communication and team building. Areas of focus will include active listening skills, exploring ideas, working as an ensemble, and Improv’s core tenet of “Yes And”. This program is designed to be relevant for everyone. Improv will improve your interactions in the workplace and at home.

You'll learn a mixture of things including basic improv exercises, exciting “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” short-form games, group games, and more!  It’s fun and you are guaranteed to laugh and learn!

Kimberly Gotches says "I am so excited! I SO recommend anyone trying this (IMPROV) out. Even though I worked in public relations and marketing, I was nervous when I first took the leap to try improv. I can honestly say, the experience was life changing. I don't think I'd be going so far out of my comfort zone - starting a new career, moving to a new state and taking a chance on my relationship - if it weren't for the confidence I gained in these workshops! I've learned to trust that I can react when life throws me something unexpected. I can't wait to come play again tonight before I go! Thank you."

Non-performance IMPROV classes

IMPROV’s a great tool for gaining confidence in all kinds of situations. The focus of this class is fun!  We are not a performance troupe.  No experience is required to join.

“Improv is not just comedy.  It is a tool for better communication and team building that should be accessible to everyone,” says Cynthia K Wade, Managing Director of do-over.me, a local not-for-profit. Bill and IMPROV combine forces to engage a committed troupe in practice sessions that allow them to stay in the moment and focus on laughter and learning.  Wade continues, “This is experiential learning at its best and it’s the best way for adults to learn.  Everyone has fun, laughs and exercises their mental muscles in building tools that can help them in everyday life situations.”

Improvisation is a life skill.  And, it can be learned.  It teaches us to listen well, respond more effectively, find places to agree and make our partners look good.  All are great life skills, equally applicable in our personal and professional lives.  Improv is fresh, spontaneous and freeing.  It forces you to stay in the moment.  It teaches creativity and collaboration. Improv is certainly useful in both planned and unplanned situations.

For the job seeker, IMPROV can provide an opportunity to learn new skills and strengthen others.  During this evening, you will learn

  • To be comfortable with spontaneous, improvised speech

  • To use “the pause” effectively

  • To move a conversation forward with the simple words, “Yes, and”

  • To practice better listening skills so that your responses are better targeted

  • To increase your vocabulary

  • To heighten awareness

  • To encourage creativity

  • To ease decision making stressors

  • The difference between being prepared and being ready

Let’s face it. Life is something we all make up as we go along. No matter how carefully we formulate a script, it is bound to change when we interact with people with scripts of their own... (so) loosen up, think on (your) feet and take on everything life has to offer with skill, chutzpah and a sense of humor.
